The Foundation and the Institute: A Formal Partnership
A framework agreement governs the cooperation between the Institute and the Gustave Roussy Foundation to accelerate cancer research, strengthen philanthropic efforts, and maximize the impact of funding for the benefit of patients. Signed for a term of five years, renewable in three-year periods, it reflects a commitment to close and lasting collaboration between the two institutions and their shared dedication to defeating cancer.
A collaboration built around a shared vision
As the leading French and European center for the fight against cancer, Gustave Roussy draws on two entities with complementary missions: the Institute, a cancer center with a threefold mission of patient care, research, and training; and the Foundation, which focuses its efforts on strengthening the site’s cancer research and innovation ecosystem.
Already closely linked, the two entities share the same ambition: to accelerate cancer research and maximize its impact on patient recovery and quality of life. The agreement establishes a common legal framework that defines the roles, responsibilities, and terms of collaboration for the entities united under the “Gustave Roussy” banner.
Concrete Commitments to Research
The agreement fosters synergy and optimal efficiency between the two entities. The Foundation strengthens Gustave Roussy’s exploratory and translational research through a program of chairs of excellence in oncology, designed to attract the best international talent. The Foundation and the Institute jointly fund medical-scientific and emerging research programs, as well as state-of-the-art equipment, to enhance the teams’ competitiveness. The Institute, for its part, develops clinical studies. It also provides logistical support to the teams. Additionally, it ensures the operation of technology platforms that bring together state-of-the-art equipment and the expertise necessary for the development of ambitious scientific projects.
This clear division of responsibilities maximizes the effectiveness of every euro invested in the fight against cancer.
From Discovery to the Patient: Harnessing Innovation
The agreement also includes a component dedicated to the commercialization of scientific knowledge. Gustave Roussy Transfert, a spin-off of Gustave Roussy, is the sole agent responsible for supporting discoveries resulting from collaborative research programs—from protecting intellectual property rights to forging industrial partnerships and launching startups.
Transparent and Rigorous Governance
Three advisory bodies oversee this cooperation:
- the Strategic Research Committee, responsible for setting broad scientific directions and monitoring contributions from both parties;
- the International Scientific Advisory Board, which evaluates research programs twice a year;
- the Fundraising Committee, which ensures that donations are used appropriately and in accordance with donors’ intentions; meeting twice a year, it is also responsible for setting strategic philanthropic priorities in support of a shared strategy.
