Types of Cancer
Cancers are not a single disease but a group of very different conditions. They can develop in almost any organ in the body and have their own distinct biological, molecular, and clinical characteristics. This page provides access to information on the main types of cancer treated at Gustave Roussy, as well as content dedicated to diagnosis, symptoms, treatments, and research.
Cancer is defined by the organ where it originates, as well as by the type of cell
An adenocarcinoma develops from glandular or secretory cells. Other cancers arise from different types of cells, such as sarcomas in connective tissue, hematologic cancers in the blood, or neuroendocrine tumors in cells capable of producing hormones. This classification helps guide the selection of diagnostic tests and treatments.
Different types of cancer may share the same molecular abnormality
Two tumors that have developed in different organs may share common biological characteristics. In certain situations, molecular analysis of these tumors can point toward targeted therapy, immunotherapy, or a clinical trial. However, the tumor’s location remains essential for determining the treatment strategy.

A program tailored to each situation
The specific diagnosis, the stage of the disease, the tumor’s biological characteristics, and the patient’s overall condition are used to determine the treatment plan. Cases may be discussed during a multidisciplinary team meeting to develop a personalized treatment plan.
