Sarcoma Committee
Director: Dr. Matthieu Faron, surgical oncologist
Multidisciplinary expertise in sarcomas and complex tumors
The Sarcoma Committee cares for patients with soft tissue sarcomas, bone sarcomas, gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), and other rare tumors. These diseases can occur in many different tissues and organs and encompass a wide range of diagnoses.
Each case is reviewed by sarcoma specialists to confirm the diagnosis and develop a treatment strategy tailored to the nature of the tumor, its location, its extent, and the patient’s condition.
Tumors Treated
- Soft-tissue sarcomas:
Tumors that develop from connective tissues, including muscles, fatty tissue, blood vessels, and other supporting tissues - Gastrointestinal stromal tumors
GISTs that originate in the wall of the digestive tract - Rare and Complex Tumors:
Chordomas, small round cell desmoplastic tumors, aggressive angiomyxomas, angiomyolipomas, and solitary fibrous tumors - Bone sarcomas:
Tumors that develop in the bones, requiring coordinated expertise with orthopedic surgery - Desmoid tumors:
Rare, locally aggressive tumors with no metastatic potential, for which treatment strategy must be discussed at a specialized center - Sarcomas in adolescents and young adults:
Care organized in collaboration with pediatric teams and specialists in young adults
An expert assessment before making any decisions
An MRI or CT scan determines the tumor's location, its relationship to neighboring structures, and its extent.
Analysis of the specimen confirms the diagnosis. A review by an expert pathologist and molecular testing may be necessary.
When necessary, a biopsy should be scheduled before treatment in order to obtain a representative sample without compromising the rest of the treatment plan.
The case is discussed at a multidisciplinary consultation meeting focused on sarcomas before any treatment decision is made.

Research on Sarcomas
The clinical research conducted by the committee aims to better characterize the diversity of sarcomas and to evaluate new treatment strategies. This research draws on diagnostic expertise, molecular characterization of tumors, and the enrollment of patients in clinical trials when their condition and the protocol criteria allow.
Identify abnormalities specific to certain subtypes in order to refine the diagnosis and, in certain situations, guide the treatment strategy.
Improve the planning of interventions and balance disease control with the preservation of organs and functions.
To evaluate new drugs, new combination therapies, and approaches tailored to different subtypes of sarcomas.
Share clinical and pathological expertise within national networks dedicated to these rare cancers.
