Summary
The team is studying how the individual factors that make up the exposome, the living environment, and genetic predisposition interact to influence the onset and progression of common chronic diseases: cancers, cardiometabolic diseases, and age-related neurodegenerative diseases. The goal is to assess combined exposure to multiple risk factors, to study their relationship to the onset of diseases throughout the lifespan, and to examine their influence on the progression of these diseases. The team studies the effect of the exposome across generations and the transmission of characteristics among individuals within the same family and across multiple generations.
The team’s work focuses on the following research areas:
-
The role of biological and molecular factors in the development of cancers and major chronic diseases.
-
The identification of new biomarkers for prediction and early diagnosis.
-
The links between lifestyle factors, health behaviors, and chronic diseases.
-
Environmental and occupational exposures and their effects on health, as well as their associations with various diseases.
-
The determinants and consequences of motor decline during normal and pathological aging.
-
Survival and quality of life following the onset of chronic diseases.
-
Heredity and the intergenerational transmission of health determinants.
Our research program is based primarily on the E3N-Générations prospective family cohort (www.e3n-generations.fr), but also on case-control studies, research projects, and other health databases. This primarily concerns breast cancer (CECILE, BCAC), prostate cancer (EPICAP, CHLOECAPA, PRACTICAL), lung cancer (WELCA, ICARE), thyroid cancer (CATHY, New Caledonia, EPITHYR), Parkinson’s disease (COURAGE-PD), and the health effects of air pollution (ELAPSE).
The team’s main findings focus on:
-
Hormone therapies and the risk of breast, ovarian, endometrial, and skin cancers.
-
Intake of fiber, meat, fish, and calcium and the risk of colorectal cancer.
-
The ingestion of excipients via medications and cancer risk.
-
Environmental exposures and the risks of major chronic diseases.
-
The influence of reproductive factors, exogenous hormone use, and physical activity on the risk of Parkinson’s disease.
The main results of the E3N-Generations Cohort are available on the website https://www.e3n-generations.fr/les-resultats
