Summary
The EpiRad team studies the long-term health effects of ionizing radiation and cancer treatments, primarily in children, adolescents, and young adults. Its goal is to better understand the clinical, dosimetric, biological, and socioeconomic determinants of iatrogenic complications in order to improve prevention, personalized treatment, and the organization of long-term follow-up.
The research is organized around four complementary areas:
-
the evaluation of late effects associated with advances in cancer therapy, including radiation therapy, radioisotopes, and innovative drugs
-
the identification of markers of genetic susceptibility and accelerated aging
-
the development of advanced statistical methods and risk prediction tools
-
the evaluation of long-term surveillance strategies, adherence to recommendations, and new communication tools for survivors
The team draws on unique research infrastructures, notably the FCCSS (French Childhood Cancer Survivor Study) cohort, as well as the VENUS, ANGIO, HARMONIC, and HORUS cohorts. These resources have demonstrated the persistence, several decades after treatment, of risks for secondary cancers, cardiovascular disease, ototoxicity, and other conditions.
EpiRad is also developing innovative methodological approaches that incorporate measurement uncertainties, voxel-based analyses, and artificial intelligence to fully exploit three-dimensional dose distributions and refine predictive models. At the same time, the GeneFCCSS program combines exome sequencing, transcriptomics, and molecular epidemiology to identify rare variants, biomarkers, and polygenic risk scores associated with late complications.
EpiRad’s work has a major impact on clinical guidelines, screening strategies, and personalized medicine.
