Overview
The CIC BIOTHERIS is a Clinical Research Center dedicated to the development of in situ immunotherapy, an innovative approach that involves the direct administration of biotherapies with the goal of transforming the tumor into a patient-specific vaccine against their cancer.
Operating under the supervision of Inserm, the DGOS, Gustave Roussy, and Paris-Saclay University, its mission is to accelerate the development of new strategies for intra-tumoral immunotherapy in order to improve treatment efficacy while reducing systemic toxicity.
The center’s activities span the entire spectrum of clinical development, from early-stage “first-in-human” trials to advanced-phase multicenter trials. The main areas of research focus on intratumoral immunotherapies, oncolytic viruses, messenger RNA, immunomodulatory antibodies, and strategies combining interventional radiology and immuno-oncology. The CIC BIOTHERIS also develops innovative approaches to locoregional administration and analysis of the tumor microenvironment, in conjunction with translational and preclinical research programs.
CIC BIOTHERIS is now recognized as a major player in interventional immunotherapy, with publications in *Nature*, *Clinical Cancer Research*, the *Journal for ImmunoTherapy of Cancer*, and *Annals of Oncology*. In 2026, the NIVIPIT study, published in *Nature*, demonstrated that intratumoral administration of ipilimumab reduced severe toxicities by more than half while maintaining antitumor efficacy in patients with metastatic melanoma. This research has also identified new biomarkers predictive of response and contributes to the international reputation of French research in immunotherapy.
