Pain Management

Pain is not inevitable. At Gustave Roussy, pain prevention, assessment, and treatment are an integral part of the care pathway. Specialized teams work alongside patients and healthcare professionals to relieve pain associated with the disease, treatments, or their consequences.

Pain: A Priority in Care

Pain can have many causes: cancer, surgery, treatments, medical tests, or complications from the disease. Its impact often extends beyond the physical realm and can affect quality of life, sleep, eating habits, independence, and mood.

At Gustave Roussy, the goal is to identify pain early and provide care tailored to each individual’s situation through a comprehensive and personalized approach.

Pain should be reported

Regardless of its severity, it is important to discuss it with your healthcare team so that the most appropriate solutions can be implemented.

Assess to Provide Better Relief

Pain is assessed regularly using tools tailored to each patient’s age and condition. This assessment allows us to adjust treatments and measure their effectiveness over time.

How is pain managed?

Pain Assessment and Treatment Center

The Pain Assessment and Treatment Center (CETD) at Gustave Roussy offers:

  • nursing and medical consultations for outpatients
  • nursing and medical consultations for inpatients
  • a multidisciplinary evaluation with a psychologist and social worker,
  • alternative medicine consultations (auriculotherapy, acupuncture, mesotherapy, relaxation, transcutaneous stimulation, etc.),
  • telephone follow-up for patients at home.

A Pain Management Committee (CLUD) is also in operation at Gustave Roussy. It serves as a think tank and policy-making body, working in constant collaboration with the hospital administration and the Hospital Medical Conference, as well as with the clinical departments, the pharmacy, and the administrative and technical departments.

Trials of Medical Cannabis

Gustave Roussy is participating in the National Agency for Medicines Safety’s trial on medical cannabis, announced in March 2021.
The goal is not to determine whether cannabis is effective, but rather to collect data on the feasibility and safety of prescribing cannabis in hospitals.
