Psychological support throughout the entire course of care
A cancer diagnosis, treatments, the changes they bring about, and concerns about the future can lead to questions, stress, or psychological distress.
At Gustave Roussy, psychiatrists and psychologists in the Psycho-Oncology Unit support patients at every stage of their journey to help them better cope with the disease and its consequences. This support may be offered during treatment, upon returning home, when resuming work, or after treatment has ended.
Key Takeaways
Psychological support is an integral part of the patient's comprehensive care and is available to both patients and their loved ones. Consultations are provided by professionals who specialize in cancer-related issues.
Support tailored to each person's needs
Psychologists and psychiatrists see patients for individual consultations to address emotional, relational, or psychological difficulties related to the illness. These consultations may take place on an outpatient basis or during a hospital stay.
Family members can also receive psychological support upon request. This support helps them address the challenges they face as a result of the illness and their role in caring for the patient.
A specialized clinic is available to help patients quit smoking or stop drinking, with care provided by an addiction specialist and a specialized nurse.
Specialized professionals support children with cancer, as well as children whose parents are ill, to help them express their questions, concerns, and emotions.
Workshops to share, exchange ideas, and move forward together
In addition to individual consultations, the Psycho-Oncology Unit offers several workshops and support groups. These group sessions provide an opportunity to talk with professionals and others facing similar situations.
They provide safe spaces for conversation, encourage the sharing of experiences, and offer practical tools for coping with the challenges of daily life.
Designed for patients preparing to return to work after a sick leave, this group workshop addresses issues that often arise during this time: how colleagues perceive them, self-confidence, performance, communicating about their illness, and concerns about returning to work.
Led by clinical psychologists, the workshop is held in small groups to encourage the sharing of experiences.

These groups aim to foster dialogue between parents and their children when illness disrupts communication within the family. Children can ask questions, express their emotions, and meet other young people in similar situations.

A child's illness can have a significant impact on his or her siblings. These groups provide siblings with a safe space where they can be heard and supported, share their feelings, talk with other children, and better understand the illness and its treatments.
