What is gynecologic oncology surgery?
Surgery is one of the main treatments for gynecologic cancers. Depending on the situation, it may be used alone or in combination with other treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or innovative therapies.
The goal is to ensure the best possible control of the disease while minimizing the side effects of treatment and preserving quality of life as much as possible.
Key Takeaways
Each patient receives a personalized treatment plan developed through collaboration among surgeons, oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, and pathologists.
InstaDiag
Spotlight on InstaDiag Gynecology
Gustave Roussy offers an InstaDiag Gynecology program designed to diagnose and provide prompt, appropriate care to patients with suspicious results from an examination performed at a local clinic.
Your Care Journey
We are committed to quickly organizing your care so that we can work with you to outline the various steps in your treatment plan. Depending on your situation, we may recommend additional tests, a consultation with a specialist, or a discussion during a multidisciplinary team meeting to determine the most appropriate treatment strategy.
Fertility preservation has been one of the department’s priorities for over 30 years. It is systematically considered whenever it can be safely offered without compromising the effectiveness of treatment.
Depending on the situation, various strategies may be implemented:
- procedures that preserve the uterus and all or part of an ovary;
- egg retrieval prior to treatment;
- preservation of ovarian tissue during the procedure.
This issue is addressed during the initial consultation. Complex cases are discussed in a dedicated multidisciplinary consultation meeting, in collaboration with the assisted reproductive technology team at Béclère Hospital.
Whenever possible, the teams prioritize conservative approaches aimed at preserving patients’ fertility, ovarian function, and quality of life.
This consideration is an integral part of developing the treatment plan and is discussed with each patient based on her individual situation and life plans.
Procedures That Are Becoming Less and Less Invasive
At Gustave Roussy, more than 90% of patients undergoing surgery for uterine cancer (cervical or endometrial cancer)—whether for uterine surgery (“simple hysterectomy or so-called “extended” hysterectomy) or for lymph node procedures (sentinel lymph node biopsy or lymph node dissection), undergo minimally invasive surgery via laparoscopy or robot-assisted surgery. This approach results in a less painful procedure than open surgery (laparotomy), a faster recovery, and an early return to daily activities.
Since 2025, certain procedures have been performed using the latest-generation Da Vinci Single Port (SP) surgical robot, which enables minimally invasive procedures through a single incision.
Surgery for ovarian cancer is one of the major areas of expertise of the gynecologic surgery department at Gustave Roussy.
The quality of this surgery is the most decisive prognostic factor for this disease and depends directly on the expertise of the surgeon and their team.
These procedures often involve extra-gynecological interventions (involving the digestive tract, the diaphragm, etc.) that are performed entirely by our surgeons, who are specifically trained in these complex procedures.
Beyond technical excellence, the team is strongly committed to optimizing perioperative care, working in close collaboration with anesthesiologists and the operating room and inpatient care teams.
This includes:
- personalized pain management,
- optimized intraoperative monitoring (during surgery),
- early rehabilitation,
Working closely with anesthesiologists, operating room staff, and inpatient ward staff, the team helps speed up postoperative recovery and improve patients’ overall quality of life.
Multidisciplinary care
Gynecologic oncology surgery is part of a coordinated care pathway involving surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, oncofertility specialists, and supportive care professionals.
This collaboration makes it possible to offer each patient a personalized care plan that takes into account her disease, treatments, life plans, and quality of life.
