Organized from April 14th to 19th, 2023, in Orlando, Florida (United States), the annual congress of the American Association for Cancer Research brings together scientists, clinicians, and oncologists from around the world to discuss the latest advances in cancer research. Gustave Roussy is present at this flagship event in oncology with around forty studies and presents one of the plenary sessions on the biology of macrophages associated with tumors.

Nearly 6,000 presentations are on the program of this congress, including 250 clinical trials. Several categories are accessible: daily plenary sessions, symposiums, posters, as well as training sessions and methodological workshops. The physician-researchers from Gustave Roussy see their work presented in four plenary sessions, seven mini-symposia, and thirty posters.

A plenary session dedicated to macrophage heterogeneity

Florent Ginhoux, an immunology researcher and associate professor at Gustave Roussy, will present the plenary session on April 18th on the theme: "Understanding the biology of macrophages associated with tumors to develop more effective anti-cancer immunotherapies". His team's work focuses on the biology and origin of macrophages, a cell population that is dominant in tumors and often associated with unfavorable responses. Taking into account the heterogeneity of macrophages, revealed in preclinical models, could ultimately be used in the development of new treatments for the benefit of patients.

Spatial transcriptomics and liquid biopsy on the agenda

The daily plenary sessions of the congress address several topics, including the history of the KRAS gene, early detection and interception of cancer, immune ecosystems, and drug discovery and engineering. Spatial transcriptomics, an innovative technique for measuring gene activity and mapping their position within tissue, will be highlighted this year. Several physician-researchers from Gustave Roussy will present studies related to this theme. Liquid biopsy is also on the program for numerous thematic sessions. Based on the analysis of circulating tumor cells or circulating tumor DNA in the blood, this set of blood tests provides a complementary approach to cancer and its evolution. An essential advance for numerous clinical applications in which experts from Gustave Roussy participate.

  • Living with and beyond cancer: the promises and challenges of digital health

In a Viewpoint article published in The Lancet Digital Health, Drs Ines Vaz-Luis and Maria Alice Franzoi, together with Emmanuel Mussault, a patient partner at the PRISM University Hospital Institute, examine the role that digital tools can play in supporting people living with and beyond cancer. Their central message is that these technologies can support more personalised and accessible care, but their value depends primarily on how they are integrated into care pathways, the human support provided, their ability to address individual needs and their evaluation in real-world settings.
