The Gustave Roussy Institute

The leading cancer treatment center in France and Europe, and the sixth-best cancer hospital in the world according to Newsweek magazine, Gustave Roussy is a center for care, research, and education that treats patients with all types of cancer, of all ages, and at all stages of the disease. Its expertise in rare cancers and complex tumors is internationally recognized.

Gustave Roussy brings together medical, scientific, and technological excellence and aims to cure 80% of cancer patients by 2040.

Campus Gustave Roussy

Ranked among the world’s best cancer hospitals, Gustave Roussy is a private, nonprofit institution entirely dedicated to the fight against cancer. Based on a unique model that combines patient care, research, and education, the Institute treats more than 24,000 new patients each year, who benefit from the excellence of its medical, scientific, and nursing teams.

At the heart of the European Cancer Research Campus

Located in Villejuif, at the heart of the Paris-Saclay Cancer Cluster—one of Europe’s most ambitious ecosystems dedicated to innovation in oncology—Gustave Roussy brings together nearly 4,000 employees, including more than 1,400 professionals engaged in research. Its organizational structure fosters ongoing collaboration between clinicians, researchers, engineers, and industry partners to accelerate the transformation of scientific discoveries into tangible advances for patients. Thanks to this integrated approach, the Institute is now a global leader in personalized medicine, immunotherapy, genomics, artificial intelligence, and the development of innovative therapies. Its ambition is clear: to help cure 80% of cancers by 2040.

Three Missions to Cure Cancer

Gustave Roussy’s mission is built on three inseparable pillars. To provide care by offering each patient comprehensive, personalized, and compassionate care that takes into account not only treatments but also physical, psychological, and social quality of life. Innovation, by conducting cutting-edge basic, translational, and clinical research to open access to the most promising treatments and develop the therapeutic solutions of tomorrow. Finally, training by preparing healthcare professionals and researchers for the future challenges of oncology through high-level educational programs in partnership with Paris-Saclay University. Through these three missions, Gustave Roussy pursues a single goal: to achieve lasting progress in the fight against cancer for the benefit of patients, their loved ones, and society as a whole.

World-class research with societal impact

Gustave Roussy combines basic research, translational research, and clinical research—all of which drive therapeutic innovations. Gustave Roussy focuses its research primarily on personalized medicine, immunotherapy, and DNA repair, making it today Europe’s leading center for personalized medicine and immunotherapy.

Cutting-edge medicine in the service of humanity

Gustave Roussy currently ranks first in Europe for early-phase clinical trials, thanks to its dedicated department, Ditep, which facilitates patients’ access to innovative medications within a very short timeframe.

Train all cancer care professionals

Through its Education division, Gustave Roussy supports those working in the fight against cancer and anticipates future breakthroughs in oncology.

The Institute trains professionals for the oncology careers of tomorrow through Gustave Roussy Education, affiliated with Paris-Saclay University. It is also home to the Doctoral School of Oncology, the only single-discipline doctoral school dedicated to oncology in France.

Institutional project

In 2026, Gustave Roussy published its institutional plan for 2030, reflecting its ambition to continue its development as a global benchmark and European leader in oncology, while strengthening its capacity to treat and support patients and offer each one the best chance of recovery. Building on the Institutional Strategic Plan launched in 2020, it aims to adapt the Institute to the major scientific, technological, and societal changes of the coming years. This project is based on a model that combines care, research, education, and innovation, supported by the judicious use of technology, a commitment to excellence, and a constant focus on economic balance. It embodies a collective ambition: to help cure 80% of cancers by 2040 through an institution that is more agile, more innovative, and consistently patient-centered.

  • Implement personalized care pathways;
  • Strengthen the integrative research model;
  • Ensure resources commensurate with our ambitions;
  • Accelerate digital transformation and the deployment of artificial intelligence.

A Century of Victories Over Cancer

In 1921, Professor Gustave Roussy established the first clinic in Villejuif dedicated to cancer patients, laying the foundation for modern oncology. A few years later, he opened a cancer institute that bears his name today.

Gustave Roussy: La vie en plus

What if courage were told through comic panels? Read “La vie en plus,” a comic book written by Izabo and Juliette Vaast, published in 2026, which takes readers behind the scenes at Gustave Roussy and follows Marion’s journey from her diagnosis to remission. In this immersive journey, we discover the crucial role of healthcare providers, caregivers, and researchers through a gentle, educational slice of life that sheds light on a complex subject.

The day she receives her breast cancer diagnosis, Marion’s world is turned upside down. Very quickly, the young mother is referred to Gustave Roussy, where she begins her journey toward recovery. Through her eyes, the reader is immersed in a healthcare journey that is both intimate and universal. Between rapid diagnoses, cutting-edge surgery, and the hopes fueled by research, each step—and every encounter—enables Marion to move forward and gain a fresh perspective on medical advances and common misconceptions.

This documentary work, co-created by the authors, the teams at Gustave Roussy, and Glénat Publishing, offers a contemporary vision of oncology: human, innovative, and resolutely forward-looking.
